From ammonia to hydrogen: two membranes, one process.
COUPLE is a European project developing a new technology to efficiently recover hydrogen from ammonia. As hydrogen becomes increasingly important for decarbonising industry and transport, ammonia offers a practical solution for its storage and transport.
However, converting ammonia back into hydrogen remains energy intensive and inefficient. COUPLE addresses this by combining two advanced membrane technologies, palladium membrane reactors (PdMR) and proton ceramic electrochemical reactors (PCER), into one integrated process, enabling high-purity hydrogen recovery with improved energy efficiency and reduced operational costs.
Project’s objectives
- 99.9% ammonia conversion
- 95% hydrogen recovery
- High-purity hydrogen output with efficient energy use
- Hydrogen cost reduction to ~0.75 €/kg
