On 29 October 2026, Project Coordinator Gautier Papon (CoorsTek Membrane Sciences) presented the project at the meeting of the Ammonia Focus Group of the German Technical and Scientific Association for Gas and Water (DVGW), hosted by the Gas- und Wärme-Institut Essen (GWI), together with COUPLE partners Anne Heuser (RWTH Aachen University), Jens Wartmann and Angela Kruth (CAMPFIRE AG).

The focus group brings together participants from research and industry to exchange ideas on current ammonia-related research projects and topics.

In his presentation, Gautier introduced the COUPLE ammonia cracking system, which combines palladium-based membrane reactors (PdMR) and proton ceramic electrochemical reactors (PCER) in one integrated process to recover high-purity, pressurised hydrogen from ammonia. COUPLE will scale up the technology to a 100 kg H₂/day demonstration plant in Poppendorf, Germany.

The venue was a fitting one: GWI is an independent energy research institute with more than 85 years of activity and over 100 interdisciplinary staff, and it is itself exploring ammonia as a climate-neutral fuel for industrial high-temperature processes in the NH3-Glas project.

The meeting gave COUPLE a valuable opportunity to connect with the German gas and energy community and discuss ammonia’s role as a hydrogen carrier with experts from research and industry.
