Ammonia
and society
Technological progress alone is not enough. The wider use of ammonia as an energy carrier also depends on public acceptance. This can be shaped by perceptions of safety and handling, and by where facilities are located.
The road to
market
COUPLE is designed with market uptake in mind. During the demonstration, the project aims to supply its hydrogen to real on-site end users to test client/supplier integration. It will also assess the techno-economic and environmental performance of its technology, including a life-cycle assessment, benchmark it against other ammonia cracking solutions and model its scale-up to 10 tonnes of hydrogen per day. Business models and an exploitation roadmap will prepare uptake, with market entry anticipated after 2030.

TECHNOLOGY READINESS
From lab to plant
Moving from the laboratory to real-world operation is an essential step towards market uptake. COUPLE’s demonstration plant will be installed at the Green Ammonia ChemPark in Poppendorf, in north-eastern Germany, where the plant could be connected to a series of hydrogen-using applications. Designed to produce 100 kg of hydrogen per day, the plant will be operated for at least 5,000 hours under real industrial conditions.

Digital twin
The plant will be paired with a digital twin: a virtual replica that combines real-time data from its sensors with process models. It will support the monitoring of the plant, allow different operating scenarios to be tested without risk and show potential users how the technology could be integrated into their own facilities.
