From ammonia to hydrogen:
two membranes, one process.

Hydrogen is central to a climate-neutral Europe, but storing and moving it is complicated. Ammonia, a hydrogen carrier molecule which is already produced and shipped worldwide, can be used to transport high-purity renewable hydrogen efficiently. COUPLE will demonstrate at scale a solution to efficiently recover hydrogen from ammonia.

Framing the issue

Liquid hydrogen must be kept at around −253 °C. Ammonia liquefies at −33 °C, and more than 45 million tonnes of it are already transported every year. The question is how to get the hydrogen back out efficiently.

How COUPLE works

At the heart of COUPLE are two complementary membrane reactors that work together in one continuous process, separating, purifying and compressing hydrogen while recovering the heat the process needs. The aim is to produce high-purity hydrogen with less energy and less complexity than conventional ammonia cracking.

Pathway to impact

COUPLE is designed with market uptake in mind, with a demonstration plant which aims to supply the hydrogen produced to real on-site end users. The project team will thus assess techno-economic and environmental performance, model the scale-up to 10 tonnes of hydrogen per day and study public acceptance. The goal is to prepare market entry after 2030.
